The cranberry

Cranberries, like bilberries and Concord raisins, are a variety of commercially grown fruit with North American origins. Botanically, they belong to the Ericaceous family. The plant flower, when it moves in the wind, resembles the head of an ibis, The Founders named it ‘ibis berry’, hence « Crane Berry ».
The cranberry must not be confused with the bilberry we grow. Both plants belong to the same botanical family but they differ through their various essential elements. The ruby red berries of the cranberry bushes are three times bigger than bilberries. The flesh of the fruit is light in colour, firm with an intense flavour, slightly pungent and fruity.
Bilberries, on the other hand, have scarlet red fruit the size of a small pea with a small amount of flesh and have lots of pips.

Dietetics Characteristics
Cranberries are held in great esteem the reason being their high nutritional value and physiological practicality. Traditionally eaten as an «old folk remedy», or rather «cure» or «substitutive remedy» as an accompaniment when treating classic urinary infections, the small red berries have made a good reputation for themselves. Many recent studies and researches have shown that certain polyphenols contained in the cranberry can contribute to reducing the recurrence of certain classic urinary infections suffered by a good part of the population.
