The date

A Phoenix Dactylifera palm fruit found throughout the Mediterranean Basin, the date consists of an original composition that singularises it from other fresh fruit. Also known as Tree of Life, The date palm should always have its roots in water and its palm top in the sun.

Dietetics Characteristics

Dates provide a significant contribution to energy, particularly thanks to their high mineral content; dates contribute to a good balanced diet. They are particularly rich in potassium with a high magnesium and iron content. In addition, dates are an excellent source of fibre.

Focus on the date

Natural dates are presented in :

  • « bunches » : combination of the main branch and small branches on which the fruit naturally grow on ;
  • « small branches » : branches separated from the main branch, on which the fruit naturally grow on.

The small branches are in bunches or separated from the main branch and should be10 cm minimal in length and hold up to four dates per 10 cm.
In the case of whole dates presented in « bunches » or on « small branches », the allowance is 10 % of the detached date weight.
The tips of the small branches should be cut clean.
