The fig

Fruit from the Ficus Carica palm (moraceae family), the fig is one of the oldest fruits in the World. It is not really a fruit as such but rather a receptacle: The fruits are the small grains (alkenes) contained in « pods » (syconium).
A fig weights approximately 25 g.
Figs can take on a whitish aspect (generally in January), this does not alter the quality of the fig in any way: it is said that the fig is « sugared » in fact, it is simply the sugar contained in the fruit.

Dietetics Characteristics

They are a rich source of energy thanks to their carbohydrate content. They are rich in potassium (18 % RNA per 100 g), in magnesium (15 to 19 % RNA) and in iron (14 to 25 % RNA).
They contain vitamin B and a record quantity of fibre 11 g per 100 g.

The following appellations do not correspond to figs, but to fig manipulation and packaging. The various packaging is :

Pulled

Figs that have been highly stretched. Semi-spherical shaped fig.

Protoben

From the Greek Proto (superior) and Italian Bene (good). Long shaped fig.

Lerida

Named after a Spanish town. The figs are flattened and packed in rows.

Layer

The figs are ripped from the stems and are half star shaped. They are packed in successive layers.
